Claret 2013 - 1.5L
Our flagship wine is full and rich and utterly even across the palate. The Claret, Napa-Style, is made of the best we have – a classic Left Bank Bordeaux-style blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. Ripe black cherry and toasty French oak aromas open with hints of menthol and lavender. The mid palate is elegantly even and beautifully balanced, allowing the flavors to coat the mouth and linger long in the finish. The Claret can be considered its own food group!
The mountain vineyards (Howell Mountain, Mount Veeder) share a common denominator in structure – big firm shoulders, masculine tannins, but individual characteristics. Howell Mountain, at 2000ft, on the east side of Napa Valley, has extreme exposure, larger temperature swings, and volcanic soil, creating very firm tannins. Mount Veeder has geologically churned volcanic and ocean-floor soil and the vineyard is nestled in a dense wild forest, which contributes exotic aromatics of menthol and spice in a slightly more refined interplay. Calistoga vineyards are hotter and earlier to ripen, which provide the mid-palate lushness of glycerin and a higher alcohol.
2013 Robert Foley Vineyards Claret
The prodigious 2013 Claret (a 690-case blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot) comes from various AVAs, including Mt. Veeder, Howell Mountain, and of course, Calistoga. Also aged 18 months in French oak, this wine displays compelling crème de cassis notes intermixed with cedar wood, baking spices, blackberry, and hints of mulberries and flowers. The wine has great intensity, a full-bodied, super-duper mouthfeel, and a very long finish of close to 45+ seconds. This is a beauty, with sweet tannin as well as profound depth. Drink it over the next 20+ years.
